Ever get on a subway thinking it’ll take you where you want to go, only to find out (when it’s too late) that it doesn’t?
That happened to me earlier this week. Coney Island was my destination but somehow, I landed in Brighton Beach.
Brighton Beach (Brooklyn) has a large Russian population. I’ve spent little to no time here except wandering up and down Brighton Avenue, the main drag. There are loads of mom and pop grocery markets selling fresh fruits, vegetables and basic canned and packaged items at inexpensive prices. Sandwiched in between a few of these, lie two large food oriented gourmet markets; Gold Label and Vintage Food Corporation. Gold Label has a thorough selection of Russian items; everything you could possibly want from yogurt to jams and… canned ground pork. There is a meat section, as well as a counter with a variety of fresh Russian prepared foods. Vintage Food Corporation sells both Russian and Turkish goods. They carry a big selection of grains, nuts, candies, Turkish coffee also have a meat counter. And on that note, enjoy the random slide show below!
